Wide-eyed stares greet me when I return to the tower. My kin have not seen me unkempt in decades, thanks to the carefully curated image I have worked so hard to craft. But their stares turn to smiles as they welcome me back to who I truly am, and I am joyful to have returned.

I bathe, scrubbing the stains from my skin and my hair, and tug on a simple dress. I find my cloak and unfurl the emerald green fabric, shaking out the wrinkles and accumulation of dust. I close the golden clasp at my throat and hiss in a breath as it stitches to my shoulders. An unseen wind fills it, spreading the long swath of velvet in a rippling wave. I smile, walk down the hallways and to the door, and take to the sky.

The air in my face is like the caress of a lover. Gods, I have missed the sky. I rise above the plain, looking down at the tower as I ascend, feeling the ebb and flow of the wind at my back. The sun sits low above the horizon and the wide sky has begun to turn pink and gold. The clouds are like lavender spun sugar, and I move among them, feeling the mist dissipate across my skin as I break through their ephemeral edges. I sing, my witchsong a lovely sound on the wind. I have no destination in mind, nothing to do but experience myself fully, and for the first time in decades, I feel free.
